From Ashes to Action: Building The Chattery's Creative Learning Center

Last year, we watched our classroom burn. This year, we’re buying the building and doubling our 2,500 square foot space to 5,000 square feet.

Introduction

For 11 years, The Chattery has been committed to enjoyable adult education. We are a proud women-founded and Black-led nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating an expansive community of learners and teachers through fun, affordable, and accessible learning and art experiences for adults.

Now, we have the incredible opportunity to take this vision further by purchasing our own building—a space we’ve called home for years—and transforming it into a permanent Creative Learning Center for our community.

What does that mean for the future of The Chattery?

The Creative Learning Center will be a hub for learning, innovation, and collaboration. With the purchase of this building, we will have the opportunity to expand our offerings, enhance our facilities, and foster a deeper connection with the community.

With our expanded space, we have new opportunities:

Dedicated office space for rent for like-minded nonprofits, artists and entrepreneurs
An arts and crafts creative reuse thrift shop
Flexible meeting and rental space
Expanded class offerings
Creative collaboration space for artists, entrepreneurs and makers

Cool, but what have you done so far?

Over the past decade, The Chattery has grown from a grassroots initiative, hosting a handful of monthly classes, into a vibrant community hub dedicated to lifelong learning and creative exploration (hosting nearly 60 classes a month).

In the past 11 years, we’ve:

Hosted over 2,600 classes and events
Met over 28,000 students
Hired over 350 artists, entrepreneurs and others to teach classes
Strengthened and stimulated the economy by returning over half a million dollars back to the creative economy through paying our teachers
